Product description
Part of the Tobisho x Niwaki collection, these Topiary Clippers celebrate decades of friendship, trust, and mutual respect. Jake first visited the Tobisho factory and met its owner, Yasuhito Tobitsuka in 2006 – deep in the mountains of Yamagata, an area famous for steel quality and blacksmithing. Tobisho became Niwaki’s first premium supplier, and today Daiki, Yasuhito’s son, runs the family business.
Tobisho’s tools are all drop-forged from exceptional steel, and finished by hand, with remarkable weight, balance, and attention to detail. The Japanese name for these Topiary Clippers, hakaribasami, translates as “leaf-cutting scissors,” so it’s important to use them only on soft green growth – not tough, woody stuff.
The long 108mm KA-70 carbon steel blades, spring action, and vinyl red and yellow handles make clipping a doddle.

Best usage
- Clean with a Niwaki Clean Mate rust and sap eraser
- Sharpen with a Niwaki #1000 grit stone
- Protect with Niwaki Camellia Oil
Dip blades in a weak mix of bleach or Jeyes Fluids every so often when working, to stop them clogging, and to help prevent spreading nasty viruses. If necessary, use wire wool to scrub off any stubborn, dried-on leaf resin, but a Mini Clean Mate should take care of day-to-day gunk.
