Shimenawa decorations, also known as Shimekazari, are traditional Japanese New Year’s rope decorations, often made from rice straw and hung on the doors of homes, restaurants and other establishments. They are believed to ward off evil spirits and invite good luck and prosperity.
Shimekazari are a significant part of Japanese New Year customs, symbolising the transition from the old year to the new, with hopes for a prosperous year ahead.
In this workshop, Japanese floral artist Miyuki Griffin will teach you how to make Shimenawa rope using raffia to create a festive door decoration to welcome guests and – perhaps – ward off any unwelcome spirits!
