Jake’s visit to Tobisho 2006

Tobisho x Niwaki

Die-hard gardening fans will know that Tobisho secateurs and clippers are among the most recognisable tools in the game, sought after by professional pruners and landscapers the world over. Jake and his wife, Keiko, first visited the Tobisho factory in 2006, where they met the boss, Yasuhito, and his wife, Yoko. The foundations of the partnership were laid over lengthy conversations, a delicious lunch of mochi ramen (a local delicacy) and a visit to the mountain temple of Yamadera. Soon after, Niwaki became Tobisho’s official overseas supplier, and a steady load of SR-1 secateurs began making their way to the UK.

Prized for their sharpness, strength and durability, SR-1 secateurs combine the ergonomics of B-type secateurs with the precision of A-type secateurs – an ingenious hybrid that reflects Tobisho’s knack for innovation. Based in Yamagata, Japan – a region with roots in samurai sword making – Tobisho was founded in 1930. However, their legacy dates back to 1803, and the family has been specialising in agricultural tools since 1875. Over decades of craftsmanship, Tobisho has refined its distinctive heat-treatment process, and each tool is quenched, tempered, sharpened, and polished by hand. The result is a level of quality that many consider to be the benchmark of Japanese steel.

Jake has visited the factory multiple times, witnessing the progress of apprentices and changes in leadership. Yasuhito sadly passed away five years ago, and his son Daiki has since taken over the family business. Jake remembers Yasuhito fondly, recalling a special trip he organised for Jake and Keiko to visit the wintery slopes of Mount Zao.

To commemorate this long history and share our excitement for this new partnership, Niwaki and Tobisho have embarked on a collaboration that honours decades of friendship, trust, and mutual respect. We’re extremely proud of this milestone, so if your heart beats a little faster at the sight of Tobisho’s red and yellow handles, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating this new chapter.
