Product description
Built for serious firewood duties, the Niwaki Kiwari Splitting Axe pairs a forged SC carbon steel head with a strong Japanese white oak handle – shaped with an ergonomic curve for extra power and control. Heavier and more forceful than its 1500g predecessor, it makes light work of stubborn logs, while retaining the balance and finesse that make Japanese axes so distinctive.
Complete with a smart, studded, real leather sheath, it makes a fine addition to any woodshed.
Kiwari (木割) literally means ‘dividing wood,’ but in Japanese carpentry it refers to a broader system of proportional rules, somewhat akin to Western concepts of harmonic proportion, such as the Golden Ratio.
Developed specifically for timber architecture, the principles of Kiwari establish a modular framework for designing wooden buildings with both structural integrity and aesthetic balance. One more useless bit of knowledge for a very obscure pub quiz? You’re welcome.
Best usage
Place a medium-sized log on a stable chopping block. Raise the axe high above your shoulders and swing it down in a smooth, controlled motion – guiding your top hand down the handle as you strike. After use, wipe the blade clean and store it safely in the sheath. Apply a light coat of camellia oil to prevent rust, and sharpen as needed. For extra safety, we recommend wearing gloves and protective eyewear.
