Karankoron Geta
Cut from one solid slab of hinoki, with a soft thong (hanao) and vibram soles for a vague semblance of grip and comfort, these Geta clogs were standard footwear in Japan for well into the 20th Century, for wearing outside on the street. The raised heels (actually they’re called ha, or teeth, and there are two of them, front and back) raise you out of the puddles and detritus, and make a lovely clacking sound ‘karankoron’ much missed by the older generation. Worn today for summer festivals (matsuri), your heel is supposed to overhang at the back, and the ball of your foot pivots on the front half
