Handmade Japanese tool for essential bonsai maintenance, including root pruning and repotting. The strong, durable blades will cut cleanly through dense roots and small branches, while the long handles allow for greater leverage and control. These cutters can handle roots and branches up to one-third or one-half of the blade’s length, but should not be used on deadwood, and avoid wire at all costs.
Best usage
Root pruning is vital for the health of your bonsai, especially when repotting. Before you start, use a bonsai hook to gently comb through the roots, ensuring they’re not crossed or tangled. How many roots you should cut depends on the tree species, pot size, and overall plant health, so do your research first. Once finished, place the root ball on a fresh, shallow layer of soil before filling in any gaps. Press down gently and water thoroughly to settle the soil and support recovery.
