The Keihanna Commemorative Park
Last October, dodging typhoons, we found ourselves in Kyoto. Enquiries were made, Kimura san, Japanese gardener and friend, obliged. Hence a day filming at the Keihanna Commemorative Park, somewhere between Kyoto and Nara. It’s one of Kimura san’s favourite gardens – watch the video, and hear his thoughts. Here, meanwhile, is some extra eye candy.
The garden is dominated by the bridge that runs through it, with its girders based on traditional Kyoto patterns, as well as the rock work, brought from Okayama, some of which weigh as much as 70 tons. The maple groves were just starting to suggest autumn – another month and we’d have hit a fiery peak, but there’s always something rather satisfying about NOT seeing things at their peak, knowing that there’s always more to come…
