The Shapton Glass Stones come as standard as the HR range, using White Alundum. For the Japanese market they also produce the HC range, only as grits #4000, #6000 and #8000. These three stones are light grey rather than the regular white, and use Grey Alundum - they are only produced in these three grits only as they are considered the essential stones for fine finishing work on Japanese laminated blades - kitchen knives, planes and chisels, for example - and the bind is sofet, giving a slightly softer overall feel that doesn’t scratch the softer cladding so much. There is very little actual sharpening difference between the two grades.
