Is there anything worse than bulging pockets? Unsightly lumps and bumps from overstuffed purses and wallets, sunglasses, mobile phones, reading matter, charge packs, and all the other bits and bobs you need for a day out can really detract from your otherwise sleek and determined appearance. And don’t forget the extra items you accumulate throughout the journey that end up stuffed into plastic bags from the konbini*.

All that time and effort polishing your shoes, taming your windswept mop and removing dog hair from your trousers rendered pointless by inelegant emergency luggage and lopsided jacket pockets.

What you need, of course, is a smart day bag, which is exactly why we designed the Achi Kochi Tote. It’s the perfect middling size for all your ‘everyday carry’ needs. Depending on your preference it can be carried briefcase-style or looped over a shoulder with the traditional himo** cord-hemmed straps.

12oz paraffin-waxed canvas from Kurashiki nimbly treads the line between smart and functional, and in addition to the roomy main compartment there are no fewer than seven additional pockets, including an external popper-close sleeve and an internal zippered stash pocket.

The main compartment snaps shut with a satisfying magnetic clasp and there’s a removable rigid base to add structure and stability.

The canvas has been woven on vintage shuttle looms and the whole bag has been handmade in a small atelier in Osaka. Available in two ‘goes with everything’ colours: navy finished with a sand trim, and sand with a navy trim.

*Konbini (convenience stores) are a Japanese institution: effectively mini supermarkets, often open 24 hours, they’re a great place to buy everything from a late night onigiri to an emergency pair of socks. Really useful shops, let down by incredibly flimsy plastic bags.

**Himo or Sanada himo cord is a traditional Japanese textile, woven on a loom (hata) using warp and weft threads. This technique makes for a highly durable textile that is resistant to stretching or deformation – perfect choice for adding a little grip to handles. It is sometimes known as the world’s smallest textile and is employed in all manner of Japanese goods and crafts.
