We're very pleased to have got hold of a batch of these natural blue stones from the Tanba region in Kyoto. They run at about a #2000 grit, and make a lovely smooth, bluish grey paste, great for shears, chisels and knives, although probably not wide enough for planes. Most people would call these Honyama stones, but technically Tanba is further West than the Honyama region. (Honyama is named after Honma-san, the first miner to extract stones from the area, around 1190). Most mines have closed, and these stones are proving harder and harder to find.
